5 Ways to Protect Your Skin

In honor of Mother's Day and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, we're highlighting a few things moms can do to protect themselves and their loved ones!
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States and UV rays from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. The good news? Skin cancer can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early.
Here's a few ideas to make sure you and your family is safe:
1. Seek Shade
Being out in the sun is great and healthy. Make sure to seek some shade if you're planning on being outside for an extended period, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
2. Cover Up When you're out in the sun make sure to use a UV rated umbrella, a hat, and polarized sun glasses. UV rated clothing is great for long periods of exposure.
3. Wear Sunscreen
Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Make sure to reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
4. Protect Babies Sensitive Skin
New moms should make sure to keep newborns out of the sun. If your baby is over 6 months, make sure to apply sunscreen when you and your child go outside.
5. Get an Exam
Perform a head-to-toe self-examination of your skin every month to make sure that you don't have any new or changing lesions.
